Highlanders Can't Dent Back Of Net In 2-0 Loss At Gonzaga

Spokane, WA—Gonzaga University snapped UC Riverside's two-game winning streak with a 2-0 shutout non-conference win Sunday afternoon at Martin Field in Spokane, WA. With the win the Bulldogs remain undefeated on their home pitch and move to 4-2-1 overall, while UC Riverside drops to 4-2-1 with the loss.

It was a period of two minutes on either side of halftime that decided the game. GU took the lead at the 44:05 mark as Heather Horn slipped a pass through a crowded UCR goal box to Nanda McCormick, who corralled the pass and hit a one-timer blast past Highlanders' junior goalkeeper Tawny Poggio. Just one minute into play of the second period, Gonzaga was able to cement the victory with its second and final goal of the game. Jamie Blanche tallied her third goal of the season with a five-yard rocket shot that was out of the reach of Poggio.

Gonzaga out-shot UC Riverside 16-4 and held a 5-3 advantage in corner kicks. Haugen recorded two saves in picking up her 14th career shutout win for the Bulldogs, while her counterpart Poggio allowed two goals and recorded eight saves in taking the loss for the Highlanders.
