UCR Can't Hold Lead On Senior Day As Cal State Fullerton Prevails, 2-1
10/28/2007 4:49:00 PM | Women's Soccer
Cal State Fullerton 2, UC Riverside 1 - Box Score
Riverside—In a day that belonged to UC Riverside’s four seniors, Cal State Fullerton (10-6-1, 5-2-0) scored two second half goals to edge UCR (8-8-1, 2-4-1) 2-1 in front of a season-high 245 spectators at UCR Soccer Stadium.
Highlander seniors Jill Del Rosario, Brittany Coulter, Sumariya Smith and Jenna Leonti all were honored in a pre-match ceremony. “This class has been the heart and soul of the Highlander success over the past several years,” said Head Coach Veronica O’Brien. “I want to thank them for their commitment to excellence on and off the field.”
The match was played at a brisk pace throughout, with the stats not showing the home team justice. Even though the Titans had more shots and more corner kicks than the Highlanders, UCR had many quality scoring opportunities that just couldn’t connect for scores.
The Highlanders did jump into a one-goal lead on Denise Thomas’ first goal of the season. A turnover in the middle of Fullerton’s end was picked up by Thomas who raced into the box and blasted a shot that deflected high into the air off the keeper, the ball had enough forward momentum and bounced into the back of the net in the 42nd minute.
Two early scoring opportunities for UCR came up empty in the second half, allowing CSUF an opportunity to tie the match. Only 4:40 into the half Brianna Buffington broke away and fired a point blank shot that Brittany Goetz made a spectacular save on. Unfortunately the rebound found the foot of Tanya Slusser who scored into the empty net from 15-yards away.
The final goal of the afternoon was scored by CSUF’s Lauren Cram at 65:17. After a UCR foul, a free kick was awarded near midfield. The free ball was taken by Geminesse Martinez and handled by Cram who took a left-footed shot beating the keeper to right of the goal.
The Highlanders conclude their regular season Nov. 4th at UC Irvine at 1:00 pm.
