Riverside—The UC Riverside women’s soccer team (3-2) dominated play in their 2-0 home opening win over the visiting Eagles from Eastern Michigan (2-2).
UCR appeared much qicker than their opposition in the first game that was played on the new TigerTurf surface at the UCR Soccer Stadium. The box score tells the story for the Highlanders as they outshot the Eagles 9-2 in the first half and 8-2 in the second.
Redshirt freshman Kristina Kelly scored her first collegiate goal in the 26th minute. Letty Villalpando started the scoring play with a deep cross that was handled in the 18-yard box by Lauren Minami who quickly fed Kelly. Kelly had plenty of time to settle the ball a pick her spot as the quick passes left the defense out of position.
The second half was no different than the first as UCR controlled the ball most of the period. Junior Loana Holness picked up a loose ball at midfield and raced all alone to the goal, as the keeper had no chance in the one-on-one for the final 2-0 score.
UCR not only got off 18 shots in the match but they put 12 of those on goal.
True freshman goalkeeper Deanna Borgelt notched her first career shutout with her one-save effort.
The Highlanders return to action Sunday as they host Gardner-Webb at 12:00 pm at the UCR Soccer Stadium.
