Long Beach State 4, UC Riverside 1 - Box Score
Riverside—As the UC Riverside Women's Soccer Team continued to search for its first conference win of the year Friday night, it did so without the services of leading scorer Heidi Garrett, 2007 Honorable Mention All-Conference midfielder Letty Villalpando and defensive stalwart Candis Novis, all of whom sat out the match with Long Beach with injuries.
The teams played evenly during most of the first half, with the Highlanders (5-9-2, 0-4-1) Tessa Lennala (Temecula, CA) almost giving UCR a 1-0 lead early in the period with a shot from the left side from 16 yards out.
The floodgates opened late in the first for the Beach, however, beginning with Kim Silos' sixth goal of the season from 25 yards out with 37:34 elapsed in the half. It was just 42 seconds later when Nicole Hubbard's shot deflected off of a Highlanders defender for an "own goal" to make it 2-0 Long Beach State. And with just 1:59 remaining Silos found Sarah Strohl on a restart for Strohl's first goal of the year and a 3-0 49ers lead heading into the locker room.
The beginning of the second half looked much like the first as both teams traded scoring opportunities. Ashley Parks almost connected on a header in the box off the crossbar for the Highlanders' first score, but the officials ruled that the ball didn’t cross the plane of the goal.
With less than 10 minutes to play, Caroline Shevlin found Yeraldy Hurtado in a scramble around the box and Hurtado's shot caromed down off the crossbar where it was ruled that the ball did cross the plane of the goal for her first score of the year.
Lennala finally got UCR on the board with a free kick from just outside the box with 6:04 left in the match. It was the seventh goal of the season for Lennala tying her for the league scoring lead.
UC Riverside remains at home on Sunday as they host UC Irvine at the UCR Soccer Stadium at 6pm.
