UCR Opens Big West Play With 2-1 Loss To #23 UC Santa Barbara
10/3/2008 12:47:00 AM | Women's Soccer
No. 23 UC Santa Barbara 2, UC Riverside 1 - Box Score
Riverside—The UC Riverside Women's Soccer Team played host to #23 UC Santa Barbara - the preseason favorite among Big West coaches to win the conference title this season - in the first conference tilt of the year for both programs Friday evening at the UCR Soccer Stadium.
Although the Gauchos came in to the match with the national ranking, it was the Highlanders who drew first blood as Tessa Lennala (Temecula, CA) took a Candis Novis (Murrieta, CA) pass with 25:11 gone in the first and shot it past UCSB keeper Ali Cutler into the left side of the net for a 1-0 lead. It was the fifth goal of the season for Lennala and the 18th of her UCR career.
UC Santa Barbara countered less than eight minutes later, however, tying the game at one apiece on Jacqui Simon's fourth goal of the season. The Gauchos quickly took the lead coming out of the locker room after the half as Simons dented the back of the net a second time just over five minutes into the second period.
The Highlanders tried feverishly to send the game into overtime, but UCSB proved to be too strong, holding on for the 2-1 win. UCR keeper Brittany Goetz, the conference leader in saves, added 10 more to her total against the Gauchos. The Highlanders fell to 5-6-1 on the season and 0-1 in conference, while UC Santa Barbara improved to 8-4-0, 1-0 in the Big West.
Next up for the Highlanders is a Sunday home match vs. Cal Poly at 1 pm.
