UCR (3-0) Remains Undefeated Following 1-0 Road Win Over Nebraska
8/29/2008 1:16:00 PM | Women's Soccer
UC Riverside 1, Nebraska 0 - Box Score
Lincoln, NE—Three games into the 2008 women's soccer season and UC Riverside is still unbeaten and unscored upon following a 1-0 road win over the Nebraska Cornhuskers. It is just the second time in the eight-year history of the program that the Highlanders have opened a season with three consecutive shutouts. The first was in 2004 when they began the year with four straight blankings of the opposition and won their first nine games on their way to a 13-2-4 mark on the year.
Both teams played evenly in the first half with the Cornhuskers outshooting UCR 9-8 in the period and neither team finding the back of the net. All that changed with two minutes and 10 seconds gone in the second as UC Riverside's Tessa Lennala (Temecula, CA) scored an unassisted goal for the Highlanders - her conference-leading third goal of the year.
That seemed to get Nebraska's attention as the play for the remainder of the game was largely on UCR's defensive end. The Cornhuskers outshot the Highlanders 14-5 in the second and booted five corner kicks to UC Riverside's one, but they couldn't get past goalkeeper Brittany Goetz (Irvine, CA) who posted 10 saves on the day as UCR held on for the win.
Next up for UC Riverside is a Sunday, August 31 road match vs.Creighton. Kickoff is scheduled for 11 am PT.
Notes
UCR last recorded three straight shutouts at the tail end of the 2006 season in wins over UC Irvine (3-0 on October 20), UC Davis (2-0 on October 26) and Long Beach State (3-0 on October 29). The team record for consecutive shutouts is five during the 2002 season. UC Riverside is 3-0 to start a season for the second time in its eight year history (2004). The team record for consecutive wins to start a season is nine in 2004. That team didn’t suffer its first loss until the 13th game of the year (10-0-2).
