Volleyball Earns Split On Opening Day of Montana Invitational

The UC Riverside Women's Volleyball Team (1-1) overcame a two games to none deficit Friday evening defeating North Dakota State in a decisive fifth game 15-13 to earn a split on the first day of the Montana Invitational. Earlier in the day, the Highlanders dropped a 3-1 decision to host Montana.
UCR was close to opening the season 0-2 after losing the first two games of the North Dakota State match 29-27 and 25-22, but they battled back for identical 25-21 wins in the third and fourth games and never trailed in a tight fifth game to pull out the win.
In UCR's season-opener vs. the Montana Grizzlies, it was the Highlanders who jumped out to an early 12-4 lead in Game 1 and still led 18-12 in the late going, before the Grizzlies closed things out with a 13-4 run and a 1-0 match lead.
In Game 2, it was UCR's turn to mount a comeback rallying from four points down as Kelly Fink's kill gave the Highlanders the game and evened the match Game 3 saw the Grizzlies cruise to a 25-16 win giving them the opportunity to close things out in Game 4.
They appeared well on their way to doing so as they built a 12-4 lead before the Highlanders began to climb back into the game cutting the lead to two, 24-22. However, Taryn Wright's kill on the subsequent play sealed the deal for Montana.
Fink led the Highlanders with 37 kills on the day followed by Kelly Simpson's 25 and Dominique Cowling's 17. Brittney Murrey recorded 78 assists on the afternoon raising her career total to 1,913 - 244 behind Tiffany Brooks' 2157 which rank fifth in the UCR record books.
The Montana Invitational concludes on Saturday with UCR taking on Bradley (1 pm) and Gonzaga (5 pm).
