UC Riverside 3, UNLV 2 - Box Score
Riverside—The UC Riverside Women's Soccer Team got back on the winning track Sunday evening at the UCR Soccer Stadium upending UNLV, 3-2, for the team's first win in five matches. All five goals were scored in an 10:54 stretch in the first period.
The Highlanders (5-5-1) got things rolling with 12:39 gone in the period as Heidi Garrett (Riverside, CA) stole the ball in the Rebel's backfield and beat UNLV's (8-3-1) keeper for her Big-West leading seventh goal of the season. Those seven goals tie her with three other Highlanders for fifth place on the team's single-season scoring list. Renee Scachetti holds the school mark of 13 set in 2005, and Garrett has nine more games to catch her.
UCR couldn't celebrate for long, however, as three minutes later Dani Morin and Ashleigh Shoughro combined on a give-and-go to knot things up at one apiece. Just over a minute later, the Highlanders mishandled a ball in their own end, as Shoughro centered the miscue to Amanda Forrester who deposited it in the upper left hand corner of the net for a 2-1 UNLV lead.
The goals kept on coming as less than two minutes later, Ashley Parks (Etiwanda, CA) tied the game again with a header off of a Letty Villalpando (Moreno Valley, CA) corner kick. Kristina Kelly (Escondido, CA) came through with what would prove to be the game-winner with 23:33 gone in the first half on assists from Tessa Lennala (Temecula, CA) and Garrett.
The game got more physical as it progressed with three yellow cards (two for UCR, one for UNLV) handed out in the second period. The Rebels outshot the Highlanders 12-7 after the break, but neither team was able to score. Brittany Goetz (Irvine, CA) finished the game with 10 saves for UCR.
The Highlanders host two home games this weekend as Big West Conference play gets underway: preseason favorite UC Santa Barbara comes to town on October 3 at 6 pm and Cal Poly makes their way to the UCR Soccer Stadium for an October 5 match at 1 pm.
