Gauchos Goal With 52 Seconds Left In 2 OT Sends UCR To 2-1 Defeat
10/11/2009 7:18:47 PM | Women's Soccer
UC Santa Barbara 1, UC Riverside 0
Kailyn Kugler scored both UC Santa Barbara goals including the second on a controversial penalty kick with just 52 ticks left on the clock in the second overtime period as the Gauchos picked up a 2-1 win over the visiting Highlanders.
UCSB (6-7-1, 3-1-0) dominated the stat sheet outshooting the Highlanders 29-3 on the night, including 10-1 in shots on goal. The Highlanders (5-6-3, 0-3-0) made their shot on goal count, however, as Kristina Noriega (pictured) drilled a deflected free kick into the back of the net at the 35:40 mark of the first half for a 1-0 UCR advantage.
That score held up through the half, but midway through the second Kugler took a cross from Kylie McDonald and scored from eight yards out to tie the match. The Gauchos controlled the play throughout the second outshooting UCR 10-0 in the second 45 minutes of action. Candis Novis picked up her second yellow card with 6:07 remaining in the period which forced the Highlanders to play a man down for the final 26-plus minutes.
UCSB continued to press in overtime as they were credited with 11 shots in the final 19 and change including Kugler's penalty kick in the 110th minute which came after the Highlanders were called for a foul in their own box.
The Highlanders return home for a Friday, October 16 meeting against Cal State Northridge with kickoff scheduled for 7 pm PT.
