Women's Soccer Drops Season Opener 1-0 At CSU Bakersfield
8/21/2009 9:15:56 PM | Women's Soccer
CSU Bakersfield 1, UC Riverside 0
The 2009 Women's Soccer season is underway, but unfortunately for the Highlanders it started off on the wrong foot as they fell on the road to CSU Bakersfield, 1-0, Friday evening. Shots were hard to come by with the teams combining for 17 on the night, and the Highlanders were credited with just one shot on goal coming off the foot of Sally Yunker (pictured).
The Roadrunners made their one shot on goal count, however, as with 4:34 gone in the second period Sam Pena broke free from a scrum in front of the UCR box and deposited her third shot of the evening into the back of the Highlanders' net.
UC Riverside had a chance at the equalizer with a minute to play, but their corner kick into the CSU Bakersfield box was cleared, and the Roadrunners had the 1-0 non-conference win.
The Highlanders won the previous meeting between the schools by a 4-0 count a year ago. Heidi Gassaway, Denise Thomas, Letty Villalpando and Kristy Adcock all scored goals that day for UCR as the Highlanders outshot CSUB 20-7.
UC Riverside keeper Jessica White saw her second action in goal as a collegian against the Roadrunners a year ago subbing in for starter Brittany Goetz with 14:50 remaining in the match. This year she saw 10 CSUB shots allowing just the one Pena goal.
The Highlanders have a week off before their next match - a Friday, August 28 home meeting with Oregon State. The Beavers beat UC Riverside two years ago in Corvallis, Oregon by a 2-0 score.
