Women's Soccer Outshoots Portland State 15-9, But Falls 3-0
9/17/2010 9:42:01 PM | Women's Soccer
Portland State 3, UC Riverside 0 Box Score
Riverside, CA—The UC Riverside Women's Soccer Team (1-6-0) got the better of the play for much of the match Friday evening at the UCR Soccer Stadium outshooting visiting Portland State (4-3-0) 15-9, but the Highlanders were held scoreless for the sixth time in seven matches on the year as the Vikings picked up the 3-0 win.
Portland State's Teal Sigler took the first shot of the match just 39 seconds into the first period, but UC Riverside ripped off the next four, including three by Andrea Morales, and it appeared as if the Highlanders scoreless streak would be coming to an end sooner rather than later.
But it was the Vikings who scored first on a re-start from the Highlanders defensive end of the pitch. Toni Carnovale's free kick in the 37th minute from 35 yards out was blocked by UCR keeper Jessica White, but she slipped to the ground in the process and Frankie Ross was there to boot home the rebound for her second goal of the season.
Less than seven minutes later, the Highlanders lost control of the ball in their defensive end, and Kala Renard deked one defender to clear a straight path to the goal. White got a hand on Renard's subsequent shot, but it wasn't enough to keep the ball out of the back of the net.
Trailing 2-0 heading into the second period, the Highlanders doubled down on their offensive attack, and most of the play in the final 45 minutes was on the Vikings defensive end. Despite outshooting Portland State 8-4 after the break, UC Riverside once again couldn't break the goal line, and with less than nine minutes to play Renard's shot from just inside the box made it a 3-0 match.
The Highlanders are back in action on Sunday, September 19 as they host Utah State at the UCR Soccer Stadium for a 1 pm PT kick off. It is "move-in day" on Sunday for some 20,000-plus UC Riverside students, so fans are advised to arrive early to avoid the traffic. Fans will also be asked to park in Lot 19 off of Aberdeen Road.
