Volleyball Swept 3-0 At #24 San Diego In Non-Conference Action

San Diego, CA - The UC Riverside volleyball team took a break from league play with a 3-0 non-conference loss at No. 24 ranked San Diego on Tuesday evening at Jenny Craig Pavilion by the scores of 25-17, 25-21, and 25-22.
The Torreros (9-4) are the third ranked opponent the Highlanders (1-14) have faced this season, with previous losses coming against No. 14 UCLA on Sept. 4 and No. 20 Oregon on Aug. 28.
Shelby LeDuff (pictured) led UCR with 10 kills while hitting for a .381 clip, with Amanda Vialpando adding eight kills and a team-high nine digs.
After dropping the first set 25-17, the Highlanders took a 3-0 lead in set two and pushed it out to 7-1 on a four-point rally that included two kills by Kelly Simpson, one from LeDuff, and a Courtney Wypiszynski service ace.
With UCR still leading at 10-3, USD made a run and tied the set at 13 en route to outscoring the Highlanders 13-3 to take a 16-13 advantage.
UC Riverside got to within one point at two more junctures down the stretch, but couldn't retake the lead as the Torreros took the second set 25-21.
The third set opened in reverse fashion of the second as it was San Diego who took an early 10-3 lead. This time, the Highlanders outscored the Torreros 11-4 to tie the set at 14 apiece.
UCR stayed within a couple points of USD but was again never able to retake the lead, eventually falling 25-22.
The Highlanders continue their week of non-conference opponents with a home match against CSU Bakersfield on Saturday, Oct. 2 at 5:00 pm at the Student Recreation Center.
