Volleyball Continues Non-Conference Week With CSU Bakersfield Saturday

Riverside—The UC Riverside volleyball team continues its non-conference week on Saturday, Oct. 2 with a 5:00 pm match against CSU Bakersfield at the Student Recreation Center. Fans who are unable to attend the match in person may follow it on their computers and mobile devices via LiveStats.
The Highlanders have a 33-31 all-time record against the Roadrunners. Last season, the teams faced off three times with UCR coming away with the win on two of those occasions.
GAME NOTES
FIRST WIN
The Highlanders defeated High Point in three sets 25-22, 25-17, 25-22 on Sept. 10 to earn their first win of the 2010 season. It marked the first three-set win for UCR since a 3-0 victory over Gonzaga on Aug. 30, 2008.
ALL-TOURNAMENT I
UC Riverside senior Kelly Simpson was named to the Fresno State Classic All-Tournament Team following her play to open the 2010 season. She led the team with 33 kills, 3.00 kills per set, 32 digs, and 2.91 digs per set while playing in all 11 sets for the Highlanders.
On Aug. 27, Simpson recorded a double-double with 10 kills and 10 digs against the host Fresno State Bulldogs. She followed up that performance with a career-high 17 kills and tied her then career-high with 12 digs against Santa Clara on Aug. 28.
Simpson was also named to the ASU Sheraton Invitational on Sept. 11, helping UCR to a 1-2 record over the weekend including the team's first win of the year against High Point. She tallied 20 kills, 2.22 kills per set, 23 digs, 2.56 digs per set, and six total blocks -- all top-3 on the team.
ALL-TOURNAMENT II
UC Riverside sophomore Shelby LeDuff was named to the San Jose State / Saint Mary's College All-Tournament Team after her performance for the Highlanders against San Jose State, #14 UCLA, and Saint Mary's. For the weekend, she tallied 15 kills, second-most on the team, while averaging 1.67 kills per set. She also added 14 digs.
ALL-TOURNAMENT III
Junior transfer Katie Meyers was named to the Utah State Invitational on Sept. 18 after her performances against Utah Valley, Loyola Marymount, and Utah State. Against LMU, she posted a then career-high 28 assists, and followed that up by bettering her numbers against Utah State with 46 assists while tallying a career-high 11 digs.
WRONG WAY STREAK
UCR has lost its last seven matches and 14 of 15 on the year. The team's 1-14 record is the fewest wins to open a season in the program's Division I history. Last year, the team was 2-13 through the same number of games.
STRENGTH OF SCHEDULE
The Highlanders 2010 schedule features seven matches against 2009 NCAA Tournament participants including three of the team's first six contests. The Highlanders are currently 0-3 against ranked opponents this season, with losses coming against No. 20 Oregon on Aug 28, No. 14 UCLA on Sept. 4, and No. 24 San Diego on Sept. 28.
YOUNG GUNS
UC Riverside welcomes back eight returning players from last year's squad and adds 10 newcomers in the form of four transfers and six freshmen. Of the 18 players on the team, 14 of them are underclassmen, the most of any team in the Big West Conference.
BLOCK THIS WAY
Senior Shannon Moyneur ended the 2009 season ranked first on UCR's career blocks per game list. She still leads the pack with 1.26 blocks per game through 15 games in 2010.
ALL-BIG WEST
Two members of the Highlanders were named to the Big West All-Conference team at the conclusion of the 2009 season as seniors Brittney Murrey and Dominique Cowling were each named Honorable Mention.
Murrey finished the year ranked first on the squad in assists and assists per set, second in total blocks, blocks per set, and service aces, and fourth in digs while ranking seventh in the conference in assists per set.
Cowling ranked fifth in the league in kills per set and finished first on the squad in kills, kills per set, points, points per set, service aces, and digs, fourth in assists, and fifth in blocks.
