Highlanders Drop Second Straight in Flagstaff

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – The Highlanders clashed with Grand Canyon in match two at Northern Arizona's Lumberjack Classic. This was 18th all time meeting between the two programs. The Highlanders dropped their previous match to GCU, 3-1.
In the first set, Evelyn Hendrix put the Highlanders on the board with the first kill of the match. After that, the Antelopes scored the next six points until Nicole Hughes made it 6-2.
The Highlanders cut the lead to two, 9-7, but then GCU went on another run. This time it was a modest 4-0 run, but they did not look back. GCU eventually built a 20-11 lead before taking the first set 25-13.
The second set started with GCU going on an 8-2 run. The Highlanders chipped away but GCU maintained its six-point lead. But a Juliette D'Eliseo kill, the Highlanders went on a 6-0 run of their own and cut the lead to 14-13.
After the Antelopes expanded their lead to 19-14 the Highlanders fought back cutting it to 19-16. However, another 6-1 run by GCU and the second set with to the Antelopes, 25-17.
Set three went to the Highlanders, 25-19. It started with both teams trading points. A Madison Pulsipher kill made it 8-7 Highlanders. Another Pulsipher kill followed by D'Eliseo putting the ball down gave UCR a 10-9 lead. From that point on GCU did not take a lead in the third. UCR used an 11-4 run to claim the set.
In the fourth set the Antelopes got off to a hot start taking an early 6-1 lead. After a kill by UCR's Zeynep Belgutay made it 7-3 GCU, the Antelopes went on another run eventually building an eight-point lead, 17-9.
After the lead grew to eleven a kill by Kylie Proctor made it a ten-point deficit, 23-13, but took the set 25-13 and the match, 3-1.
Next up for UCR is the final match at the Lumberjack Classic with the Highlanders taking on Omaha at 3PM.
