Highlanders Struggles Against UCSB Continue In 64-57 Loss

UC Santa Barbara 64, UC Riverside 57 - Box Score
Santa Barbara, CA—The UC Santa Barbara Gauchos have had the Highlanders number at the Thunderdome having won all 15 meetings at home between the clubs prior to Saturday's contest. UC Riverside (7-9, 2-2) was unable to break that streak as the reigning Big West MVP, Orlando Johnson, scored 28 points to lead the Gauchos (10-6, 3-2) to a 64-57 win.
The teams traded baskets for the first 10 minutes of play exchanging the lead on six occasions as neither squad was able to build more than a four-point edge during that time span. All that changed with 9:40 to go in the first as the Gauchos Greg Somogyi found himself on the business end of two alley-oop layups to give UCSB a six point advantage at 23-17.
A subsequent dunk by Johnson made it 25-17 Santa Barbara, and the Gauchos eventually built a 12-point cushion and took a 39-29 lead into the locker room. UCSB hit 10 of its first 13 shots in the half, and finished the period connecting on 15 of 23. Johnson was perfect from the field making all seven of his field goal attempts including a three-pointer.
The Highlanders opened the second 20 minutes of action on a 7-2 run to reduce the USC lead to five at 41-36, but the UCR offense went cold failing to score over a 6-minute, 11-second stretch. The Gauchos were nearly as frigid, however, and only able to push their lead out to 11. BJ Shearry's layup with 9:30 on the clock ended the drought and made it a nine-point game.
Daymond Cowlah hit two free throws on UC Riverside's next possession to reduce the UCSB advantage to seven at 47-40, but it took the Highlanders another eight minutes to get any closer when Javon Borum's three made it 61-55 with 55.4 seconds left on the clock. Elliott Berry hit two free throws with 11.4 remaining to cut the lead to five at 62-57, but Johnson's free throws with 10.5 to go iced the game.
Johnson led all scorers with 28 points, while James Nunnally added 19. Elliott Berry led UC Riverside with 14 points while Borum and Kareem Nitoto chipped in with 12 and 10 respectively.
The Highlanders return home this week for a single game, Thursday, January 20 against Cal Poly. Tip is slated for 7 pm PT at the Student Recreation Center.
