UC Riverside vs. Cal Poly Game Notes
Riverside—The UC Riverside Men's Basketball Team has just one game on its schedule this week—a Thursday, January 20 meeting with Cal Poly at the Student Recreation Center. Tip is slated for 7 pm PT, and fans who are unable to attend can listen to all the action as the Voice of the Highlanders, John Ramey, brings the call from courtside to gohighlanders.com.
With two wins in their first four conference games, the Highlanders (7-9, 2-2) have tied their best-ever start to a Big West season established by four other clubs. Only two other UC Riverside teams have improved to 3-2—the 2001-02 and 2003-04 versions.
The Mustangs had a three-game conference winning streak stopped on Saturday in a 65-53 home loss to UC Irvine. That dropped their Big West record to 3-2. Two of those three conference wins are road victories at Pacific and UC Davis.
Cal Poly boasts one of the stingiest defenses in the nation, allowing teams to score just 58.1 points per game which ranks 10th best in all of Division I. They also own one of the least efficient offenses ranking 334th in the country with 54.8 points per game, making just 36.5 percent of their shots and 27.9 percent from long distance.
The Highlanders are averaging 69.2 points per game in Big West play while the Mustangs average 51.0. Defensively, Cal Poly allows 54.0 points in conference play compared to UC Riverside's 69.0.
The Mustangs get almost half of their offensive output from two players—David Hanson (15.3 ppg) and Shawn Lewis (12.9). The duo combines to take more than half the teams shots and 64 percent of its three-pointers. Javon Borum continues to pace the UCR offensive attack averaging 14.9 points per game followed by Phil Martin's 13.2 and Kareem NItoto's 10.9.
UC Riverside owns a 41-39 all-time record against Cal Poly, but the Mustangs won both games during the 2009-10 season by a combined five points—67-65 at Cal Poly on January 21, 2010; and 87-84 (2 OT) at the Student Recreation Center on February 13, 2010.
