New Mexico Goal In 90th Minute of Play Sends UCR To 2-1 Defeat

Albuquerque, NM—UC Riverside and New Mexico appeared headed to overtime Sunday afternoon as the match entered the 90th minute of play, but the official whistled the Highlanders for a penalty just outside their defensive box with 44 seconds to play, and Roxie McFarland's subsequent free kick found its way into the back of the net to give the Lobos a 2-1 win. "I'm very proud of our team's performance in both of our matches this weekend," said Head Coach Veronica O'Brien. "To come back from a goal down against North Texas and win the match; to be 90 seconds away and from taking New Mexico into overtime on the road; we have a lot of great things ahead of us as we head into conference play."

Brianna Martinez put New Mexico up 1-0 late in the first when she gathered a deflection 41:51 into the match and slotted it past UCR keeper Jessica Olafsen. The Highlanders picked up the equalizer just over eight minutes into the second period When Lindsey Ahmed received Shelley Brumbaugh's cross in the box and beat Kelli Cornell to make it a 1-1 match.

Next up for UC Riverside is a September 25 home meeting with Lamar. Kick off is slated for 11 am.
