Women's Soccer Plays Host To Lamar Cardinals On Sunday, September 25

Riverside—The UC Riverside Women's Soccer Team (4-5-1) has just one match remaining on its non-conference schedule with a Sunday, September 25 home meeting with the Lamar Cardinals (3-3-1). Kick off is slated for 11 am, and fans who are unable to attend may follow the match on their laptops or mobile devices via LiveStats.
The Highlanders are looking to move back to the .500 mark before taking 11 days off prior to the start of Big West Conference play on October 6.
It has been a feast or famine season for Lamar in 2011 as the Cardinals have outscored their opponents 22-0 in their three victories, but have been outscored 10-1 in their three losses.They enter the weekend on a two-match winning streak having upended Southern by a 4-0 score and Texas Southern, 11-0.
This is the first meeting ever between the Cardinals and Highlanders.
GAME NOTES
GOAL!
Kayde Hensley scored the first goal of her collegiate career in a 1-1 double OT tie vs. Idaho on August 21.
Her second goal of the season was the game-winner in a double-overtime victory over San Jose State which gave the Highlanders the team championship at the UC Riverside Women's Soccer Invitational.
She was rewarded by the Big West as the conference defensive player of the week for her efforts against the Spartans and in a 3-0 win over Mississippi State.
Hensley's third goal of the season was also the game-winner coming in the first half of the Highlanders 2-0 win over Southern Utah on September 4.
A JESSICA BY ANY OTHER NAME
UC Riverside incumbent goalkeeper Jessica White was sidelined with an injury for the past eight matches, but Jessica Olafsen stepped in admirably posting a goals against average of 0.96 during that span. Olafsen was named the conference defensive player of the week on September 5 as she allowed just one goal, on a penalty kick, in two matches for a goals against average of 0.50 for the week. She also stopped 17 of 18 shots on goal during those two matches.
THE THINEST OF MARGINS I
The final margin in 38 of the Highlanders last 55 matches has been one goal or less including 13 of 18 in 2010 and 7 of 10 in 2011.
WHAT A DIFFERENCE A YEAR MAKES
One year a go, the Highlanders suffered through a one-win season that produced just three goals all year long. In 2011, however, UC Riverside already has four wins to its credit and 12 scores. The team still has nine more regular season matches to go on its 2011 schedule.
HOME COOKING
UC Riverside is 3-1 at home this season after going 0-7-1 a year ago. One more win at home would give them the most wins at home since the 2007 season (6).
TURNING THE TURNSTYLES
Attendance at home matches in 2011 is up 160 percent from the 2001 season and 68 percent since the 2007 season. The Highlanders are on pace to set a new attendance record in 2011 as well.
