UC Riverside Women's Soccer Drops 2-0 Decision To Hawai'i
10/5/2012 10:56:00 PM | Women's Soccer
Honolulu, HI—The UC Riverside Women's Soccer Team traveled to the Aloha State, Friday, in search of its first Big West win, but instead it was Hawai'i getting off the conference schnide with a 2-0 victory (Box Score).
Neither team found the back of the net in the first half as the Rainbow Wahine outshot UCR 5-4.
Hawai'i (6-5-2, 1-1-0) picked up the pace in the second, finally ending the scoring drought in the 59th minute as Tiana Fujimoto sent a through ball to McKenzie McGoldrick who beat UCR keeper Nicole Ragano to put the Rainbow Wahine up 1-0.
Ragano was in goal for the Highlanders (5-7-2, 0-3-0) making the first start of her collegiate career.
Hawai'i thought they had a second score in the books in the 71st minute, but an offside call pulled it off the board.
Three minutes later, Mariah Rojas was called for a foul in UCR's defensive 18 setting up a penalty kick for Chelsea Miyake. Ragano guessed left, but Miyake shot right, and the Rainbow Wahine had a 2-0 lead with under 17 minutes to go.
Try as the they might, the Highlanders were unable to cut into the Hawai'i lead as they were outshot 7-0 after intermission.
UCR returns to the mainland Sunday for a 5 pm road match at Cal State Northridge. Kickoff is slated for 5 pm PT.
