Northridge, CA—The UC Riverside Women's Soccer Team traveled to Cal State Northridge Sunday evening in search of its first Big West Conference win of the year, but it was the Matadors scoring three times in the first period on their way to a 3-1 victory over the Highlanders (Box Score).
CSUN got on the board with 7:27 gone in the first as Stephanie Galarze found Melissa Fernandez at the top of the box where Fernandez chipped the ball over UC Riverside keeper Nicole Ragano for a 1-0 Matadors lead.
Northridge went up 2-0 in the 25th minute as Amanda Smith laced a cross to Fernandez, whose redirect got past Ragano leaving Kendall Moskal with the open net.
Eleven minutes later, Chloe McDaniel picked up her first score of the year when she headed in Cori Deason's corner kick from six yards out.
Crystal Lopez cut the Matadors advantage to two with 10:03 remaining in the match when Jessica Cortez lined a free kick through the box that Lopez fired into the back of the net for her fourth goal of the season.
The Highlanders continued to press forward earning two corner kicks in the final three minutes, but none of their shots found the mark, and CSUN emerged with the 3-1 win.
UC Riverside remains on the road this week as the team travels to Cal State Fullerton on Sunday, October 14 for a 6 pm PT kickoff against the Titans.
