Riverside—The UC Riverside Women's Soccer Team outshot Houston Baptist 17-8 Friday evening, but gave up a goal late in the second period and could not convert on the equalizer as the Huskies walked away with a 1-0 win at the UC Riverside Soccer Stadium. (Box Score) (Watch The Highlight Video)
The Highlanders (2-1) and Huskies (2-1) both had minimal chances in the first period, with HBU taking a 5-4 edge in shots into the half.
UC Riverside peppered the net with shots early in the second period, but a penalty on the Highlanders with less than 14 minutes remaining in the match gave the Huskies a free kick from just off the end line on the right side of the box.
Arielle Rodriguez took the kick and sent it into the box where Brandi Hart headed it towards the left side of the goal. Natalie Hager was there to push it past UC Riverside keeper Jessica White, and Houston Baptist had a 1-0 lead.
The Highlanders attempted five shots in the last three minutes and had good looks on goal, including two in the last 10 seconds of play, but none dented the net as the Huskies held on for the win.
"The girls fought hard," Head Coach Nat Gonzalez explained. "HBU put pressure on us the way they played. I can't argue with the effort."
The Highlanders hit the road this Sunday for a 1 pm PT meeting with 17th-ranked Santa Clara.
