Santa Clara, CA—The UC Riverside Women's Soccer Team dropped a 3-0 decision to 17th-ranked Santa Clara Sunday (2-1) afternoon in the toughest test to date this season for the Highlanders. (Box Score)
Sarah Jackson converted a UCR defensive miscue with just 3:09 gone in the match to put the Broncos up 1-0. Less than eight minutes later, the Highlanders (2-2) committed a foul in their defensive 18, and Meleana Shim converted on the penalty kick to make it 2-0 Santa Clara.
The Highlanders settled down after that as the team's played scoreless soccer until the Broncos' Dani Weatherholdt scored with just 36 seconds remaining in the match.
"I thought we played a little tentative early in the match," said Head Coach Nat Gonzalez of the early scores, "but I was encouraged by what I saw in the second half. As long as we use this experience to better ourselves, we'll be in good shape."
Jessica White finished the match with nine saves.
The Highlanders return home this weekend for the UCR Tournament which features UTEP, Southern Utah and New Mexico State. The Highlanders take on the Aggies on Friday, August 31 at 7 pm PT, and the Miners on Sunday, September 2 at 1 pm.
