Women's Soccer Ties New Mexico State, 1-1, In First Match Of UCR Tourney
8/31/2012 1:49:00 PM | Women's Soccer
Riverside—The UC Riverside Women's Soccer Team took a 1-0 lead into the second period Friday evening, but New Mexico State scored the equalizer with 2:22 to go, and the Highlanders had to settle for the 1-1 tie. (Box Score) (Video Highlights)
UCR (2-2-1) outshot the Aggies 12-4 in the first half, but just one of those shots found the back of the net as Celina Valancia picked up her second goal of the season following a scramble in front of the New Mexico State goal.
The Aggies (0-2-1) had a few chances to tie the match up in the second half, none better than midway through the final 45 minutes of play when one of the NMSU forwards broke free from the pack. But goalkeeper Jessica White came off the end line and smothered the shot to keep the Highlanders on top.
UC Riverside wasn't so lucky as the match wound down. Following an offside call on the Highlanders, the Aggies launched a quick counter attack that caught UCR on its collective heels. Mary Kate Koziol found Layla Todd on the restart, and the match was tied at one.
There were just two shots taken in the two overtime periods, both by the Highlanders, but neither was on goal, and the tie was in the books.
The Highlanders are back in action on Sunday, September 2 as they take on UTEP in the final match of the tournament. Kick off is 1 pm PT. New Mexico State and Southern Utah square off against one another in the day's other match with kick off slated for 10 am.

With 12:17 remaining in the match, Tayler O'Hayre sent the ball into the box from inside midfield, and Skye Schultz redirected it towards the goal where Nioholson settled it, and scored her third goal of the season.
