Women's Soccer Drops Big West Opener, 5-1, To #21 Long Beach State
9/28/2012 7:20:00 PM | Women's Soccer
Riverside—After playing the 21st ranked team in the nation to a scoreless tie in the first half of play, UC Riverside's Women's Soccer Team ran into a buzz saw in the second half as the Highlanders dropped a 5-1 decision to Long Beach State in the Big West Conference opener for both clubs. (Box Score)
Although they had difficulty getting things going on the offensive end of the field in the first 45 minutes of play, the Highlanders defense kept the 49ers in check allowing just three shots on goal in the first period. Jessica White was there to make the save on all three, and the teams entered the half tied at zero.
All that changed in the second period, however, as Kristyn Benavidez picked up a loose ball in UC Riverside's defensive 18 with 4:44 gone and slotted it past White for a 1-0 Long Beach lead. Less than a minute later Nadia Link made it 2-0 49ers with an unassisted goal of her own.
That appeared to energize the Highlanders who began pushing forward offensively. Tyler Cunningham finally put UCR on the board as Andrea Luttio sent a ball into the LBSU defense that Cunningham chased down and drove towards the goal. Her shot squeaked by 49ers keeper Marrina Meyers and another Long Beach defender and the lead was cut in half.
The 49ers put the match out of reach, however scoring three goals over a 12-plus minute stretch for the 5-1 final.
The Highlanders are back home on Sunday, September 30 for a 6 pm PT kick off against UC Irvine.
