UC Riverside And Fresno State Battle To 2-2 Double Overtime Tie
9/7/2012 8:14:00 PM | Women's Soccer
Fresno, CA—UC Riverside and Fresno State battled for 110 minutes Friday night, but had to settle for a 2-2 double overtime tie as neither team found the back of the net during the overtime periods (Box Score).
The tie gives the Highlanders a 3-2-2 record through seven matches which marks the latest in a season that UCR has been above the .500 mark since 2009.
The Bulldogs outshot the Highlanders 16-5 in the first period, but it wasn't until the final seconds of the first half that Fresno State forward Callie Hancock broke through the UC Riverside defense for her fourth score of the season putting the 'Dogs up, 1-0.
The lead didn't last for long, however, as Kaitlin Anzalone found Crystal Lopez in the fifth minute of the second period for her second goal of the year.
Anzalone put the Highlanders up, 2-1, with 17:06 to go in regulation, but the Bulldogs scored the equalizer a mere 28 seconds later as Vanessa Gonzalez was credited with her first goal in 2012.
The Bulldogs outshot UC Riverside 5-0 in the bonus periods, but neither team was able to score.
Jessica White recorded 12 saves on the night which is the third highest save total by a UCR keeper in the 12-year history of the program. White also recorded 12 saves in the Highlanders 1-0 loss at Texas on September 5, 2010 (box score/recap).
The Highlanders remain on the road this Sunday as they travel to San Jose State for a 1 pm PT kick off.
