Riverside—The UC Riverside Women's Soccer Team (3-2-1) hits the road this weekend for a Friday, September 7 meeting with Fresno State at 7 pm PT and a Sunday, September 9 match at San Jose State at 1 pm.
The Highlanders are coming off one of the most impressive comebacks in the team's 12- year history as they erased a two-goal deficit against UTEP Sunday afternoon before winning the match in overtime thanks to a goal by Jessica Cortez (box score/recap/video highlights).
Fresno State (0-4-2) enters the weekend in search of its first win of the season. Three of the Bulldogs four losses have come against Top-25 competition, but they also dropped a road match at UC Davis, 2-1, and settled for 1-1 ties at San Francisco and at Cal State Northridge.
The Highlanders are 4-0-1 all-time against Fresno State, with wins in each of the last four meetings between the clubs. The last time UCR squared off against the Bulldogs was in a 1-0 Highlanders win on September 6, 2009 (box score/recap). Current UC Riverside goalkeeper Jessica White was between the pipes for the Highlanders in that match.
San Jose State owns a 2-2-1 record on the season, but the Spartans have yet to lose at home where they are 2-0-1 on the year. The most recent SJSU result came in the form of a 3-1 loss at Big West foe UC Davis.
The Highlanders own a 5-2-0 record against the Spartans in the all-time series including a 2-1, overtime win in the most recent match between the teams on August 28, 2011 (box score/recap/video highlights)

GAME NOTES
WELCOME BACK
UC Riverside's new head women's soccer coach has a familiar look about him: Nat Gonzalez, who took over the team this winter, was the Highlanders head men's soccer coach from 2001-03, restarting a program that lay dormant for a number of years prior to UC Riverside making the transition to Division I.
PLAYER OF THE WEEK
UC Riverside's leading scorer, Celina Valencia, was named Big West Conference Offensive Player of the Week on September 3, for games played from August 27 through September 2.
The Alhambra, CA native scored half of the Highlanders four goals over the weekend at the UC Riverside Women’s Soccer Tournament netting the team’s lone score against New Mexico State in a 1-1 tie on Friday (watch highlights), and one of three goals in the Highlanders come-from-behind 3-2 victory over UTEP on Sunday (watch highlights). Valencia also assisted on Andrea Morales’s game-tying goal with 12:35 remaining in regulation.
WHAT A DIFFERENCE A YEAR MAKES
Two years ago, the Highlanders suffered through a one-win season that produced just three goals all year long. In 2011, however, UC Riverside picked up eight wins on the season, remaining in the hunt for a Big West Conference postseason berth until the final match of the season, while scoring 21 goals.
SPREADING THE WEALTH
Ten members of the Highlanders dented the back of the net last year which is the most goal scorers the team has posted in a season since 2007 when 12 players etched their names into the scoring column. So far in 2012, five players are responsible for UC Riverside's eight goals.
DOUBLE-DIGIT DENTER
The UC Riverside Women's Soccer Team hasn't had a double-digit goal scorer since Tessa Lennala dented the back of the net on 11 occasions back in 2008. Celina Valencia has three goals so far on the season in six matches for the Highlanders.
