Stockton, CA—The UC Riverside Men's Basketball Team heads northward to Pacific and UC Davis this week coming off a string of three of the most exciting games in the recent history of the program—a two-point loss at Cal State Fullerton (box score/recap) an overtime defeat at the hands of top-ranked Long Beach State (box score/recap) and a 68-58 win over UC Irvine (box score/recap), ranked second in the conference at the time.
Over that span, the Highlanders are connecting on 51.3 percent (81 of 158) of their field goal attempts and 38.2 percent (21 of 55) of their three-pointers. After opening the season by scoring fewer than 60 points in seven of 13 games, UC Riverside has been above that mark in each of the last five contests.
Leading the way offensively for UCR is junior Chris Patton who is coming off of back-to-back, career-high 21 point scoring performances, and leads the Big West in field goal percentage during conference play at 68.4 percent. He also ranks eighth in the conference in scoring during Big West games at 16.2 points per game.
Junior Chris Harriel also appears to have found his shooting stroke over the past three games: after starting the season by going 12 for 80 from three-point range, he has made 42.9 percent (9 of 21) of his shots from long distance.
Last year when the Highlanders made the trip to Pacific and UC Davis, they picked up wins at both schools marking the first time they beat both of those teams on the road in the same season since UCR joined the Big West.
Pacific is in its final season of Big West play as the Tigers move to the West Coast Conference beginning with the 2013-14 campaign. They are in sole possession of second place in the Big west with wins over the Aggies, UC Santa Barbara, Cal Poly and Cal State Northridge.
The Tigers boast just one double figure scorer in Lorenzo McCloud at 11.2 points per game, but they shoot 47.0 percent as a team including 36.8 percent from beyond the arc. Not a single Pacific player averages more than 28 minutes per game, but 10 players are seeing action for more than 10 minutes per game, and nine players average more than four points per game.
UC Davis is coming off of a pair of conference road wins at Cal State Northridge and Hawai'i. Those victories evened the Aggies record in conference to 3-3.
UCD averages 72.0 points per game, but gives up 73.4. Corey Hawkins leads the Big West scoring at a 19.2 points per game clip thanks in part to a league-leading 91.6 percent shooting percentage (98 of 107) from the free throw line.
Ryan Sypkens is second on the squad averaging 13.9 points per game as he ranks first in the conference in made three pointers (61) and second in three-point shooting percentage (48.0).
J.T. Adenrele rounds out the trio of double-digit Aggies scorers at 11.5 points per game. Adenrele is second in the conference in field goal percentage making 58.0 percent (76 of 131) of his shots from the floor.
