Sammy Arellano Nets First Career Goal As Women's Soccer Ties Northern Arizona, 1-1

Riverside—Sammy Arellano scored her first goal as a collegian Sunday evening as the UC Riverside Women's Soccer Team picked up a 1-1 tie at home against Northern Arizona (Box Score).

The Lumberjacks came into the evening riding a three match winning streak which included a 1-0 season-opening victory at Long Beach State, but it was the Highlanders who scored first. UC Riverside unleashed a trio of shots in the NAU box, the third of which came when a Lumberjacks defender failed to clear the ball. Arellano picked up the loose change and deposited it in the back of the Northern Arizona net to put UC Riverside on top.

The Highlanders continued to attack in the second period outshooting NAU 10-7 after the break, but UCR was called for a penalty just outside their defensive 18 in the 63rd minute, and Savannah Berry connected on the subsequent free kick to tie the score.

UC Riverside outshot the Lumberjacks 6-2 in the bonus periods, but neither team was able to break the tie.

The Highlanders hit the road next weekend for matches at UTEP and New Mexico State.
