Riverside—The UC Riverside Women's Soccer Team is travelling to Texas to take on the UTEP Miners, Friday, September 6 at 6:00 pm PT befor emaking its way to New Mexico State for a Sunday, September 8 meeting with the Aggies at 12 pm.
UC Riverside has a 1-2-1 record after the dramatic 1-1 2OT tie with Northern Arizona at home Sunday (box score/recap). Freshman Sammy Arellano netted her first goal as a collegian to give the Highlanders an early lead. Goalkeeper Elizabeth Silas contributed 4 crucial saves in the match, 2 coming in the bunus period.
The Northern Arizona Lumberjacks came into Highlander's turf with an undefeated 3-0-0 record with big road wins over Long Beach State and CSU Bakersfield.
UTEP won its first two matches of the season, but lost 1-0 to Utah State and tied Abilene Christian, 1-1, to fall to 2-1-1 on the year. The Highlanders are 1-0 all-time against the Miners having beaten UTEP a year ago, 3-2, in overtime.
New Mexico State it 2-2-0 on the season, but is coming off of a 7-0 loss to Portland State. The Highlanders and Aggies tied one another in their first meeting a year ago as Celina Valencia helped UCR to a 1-1 final in double overtime.

UC Riverside's Head Coach Nat Gonzales was also the head coach of the UC Riverside Men's Soccer Team for three seasons when it re-launched in 2001. During his four seasons as a head coach with the Highlanders, he has increased his winning percentage each year.

ROOKIE RECKONING
In the Highlanders' 2-1, season-opening win a year ago over CSU Bakersfield (box score/recap) Crystal Lopez became the first UC Riverside rookie since Ciara Hilpert in 2008, to score a goal in the first match of her career. Hilpert did it in the Highlanders 5-0 win over Southern Utah on August 22 of that year (box score/recap).
Lopez tied for the team lead in scoring a year ago with four goals and an assist for nine points becoming the fourth freshman to lead the team in scoring in the program's history: Melisa Escamilla (2010, 2 goals, 0 assists, 4 points); Renee Scachetti (2003, 7 goals, 4 assists, 18 points); and Jessica Armel (2002, 4 goals, 1 assist, 9 points).
DOUBLE DIPPING
In UC Riverside's 2-1 overtime win over San Jose State on August 25, Tatum Lockett became the first Highlanders player to score two goals in a match since Tessa Lennala scored a pair at Cal State Fullerton on October 26, 2008 (Box Score/Recap). Lockett also became the 10th UC Riverside freshmen to score two goals in the same match, and the first since Kacie McElrath and Brittany Coulter both notched a pair vs. Nevada on August 29, 2004.

Ten members of the Highlanders dented the back of the net in 2011 and 2012, which is the most goal scorers the team has posted in a season since 2007 when 12 players etched their names into the scoring column.
