Riverside, CA—The UC Riverside Men's Basketball Team welcomes the Cal Poly Mustangs to the SRC Arena this Saturday, January 25 for a 7 pm tip off. The Highlanders are also hosting their second in a series of three Bring Back The Past events, as they honor former UCR guard William Wilson '95 during halftime ceremonies.
The Highlanders have established an uneasy pattern since the start of the new year of falling behind by double figures before storming back to close the gap.
Against North Texas on January 4, UC Riverside trailed by 16 midway through the second, but tied the game on a 21-5 run before the Mean Green escaped with a 76-72 win (box score/recap).
The Highlanders then opened conference play falling behind at Cal State Fullerton by 15 in the second period. They cut the lead to two before dropping a 78-73 decision (box score/recap).
On January 16, UCR erased a 19-point, second-half deficit at UC Davis before blitzkrieging the Aggies for a 12-point win (box score/recap).
Most recently, the Highlanders found themselves down 17 in the second half vs. UC Santa Barbara on Thursday evening, eventually sending the game into overtime before falling 68-65 (box score/recap).
Sam Finley led the UCR comeback against the Gauchos scoring 18 of his 20 points after halftime. It marked the eighth straight game in double figures for Finley who is now the sixth leading scorer in the Big West in conference games averaging 16.0 per contest. Chris Patton led all scorers in the game with a season-high 23.
Finley's recent offensive display gives the Highlanders three double figure scorers led by Chris Patton's 13.2 points. Taylor Johns is averaging 12.6 per game, while Finley is at 11.3.
Cal Poly started conference play with three straight wins, before falling 63-62 to Long Beach State on January 18. They bounced back Thursday with a 58-56 win at Cal State Fullerton.
As it has for the past several years, the Mustangs' continued success stems from its defense as they lead the conference in scoring defense at 63.8 points per game. Opponents make just 41.9 percent of their shots from the field, and 31.4 percent form long distance. Chris Eversley and Dave Nwaba each average more than 10 points per game at 13.6 and 11.7 respectively.
The Highlanders are 43-45 all-time against Cal Poly (view all-time results), but the Mustangs have won four straight including a 58-48 decision at the SRC Arena (box score/recap) and a 68-62 win at Mott Gym (box score/recap).
