Christina Tucker's Stick Back Gives Women's Soccer 3-2 Overtime Win Over UCSB
10/17/2014 8:48:00 PM | Women's Soccer
Riverside—The UC Riverside Women's Soccer Team had its backs against the wall Friday evening, trailing UC Santa Barbara 2-1 late in regulation, but Blanca Barrio's score in the 88th minute tied the match, and Christina Tucker's stick back with 3:48 gone in the first overtime period sent the Highlanders home happy.
UC Riverside jumped out to a 1-0 lead thanks in part to a record-setting assist by junior Tyler Cunningham. In the the 35th minute, the Fairfield, California native grabbed a loose ball in the Gauchos end, and dropped it back to Alexa Bustamante who scored from 19 yards out. That was the seventh assist of the season for Cunningham pushing her past three other Highlanders for the school single-season assist mark.
The lead didn't last long, though, as UC Santa Barbara (9-6-2, 2-3-0) bounced back with the equalizer 95 seconds later. The Highlanders were whistled for a foul just four yards outside their box, and Sara Feder converted the subsequent free kick to tie the score at one.
It only took another 87 seconds for the Gauchos to take the lead as McKinsey Martinez connected from 25 yards out from the right side of the pitch.
The Highlanders (7-5-3, 2-2-1) continued to push forward on offense in the second half, outshooting the Gauchos 8-2 over the final 45 minutes of regulation. It wasn't until 2:38 left on the clock, however, that Danielle Lopez and Brianna Thomasson found Barrio alone at the top of the UCSB box for the game-tying score.
UC Riverside took three shots in the overtime period, the second of which came off of Cunningham's foot with 3:45 gone in the period. The shot was at close range, but was blocked by a Gauchos defender. Thankfully, Tucker was there to punch in the rebound to give the Highlanders the win. Cunningham was credited with the assist on the play, giving her eight on the season.
The victory vaults UC Riverside into third place in the Big West pending the outcome of this evening's Cal Poly vs. UC Irvine match.
The Highlanders remain at home this weekend as they host the Mustangs on Sunday at 1 pm PT.
