Riverside—The UC Riverside Women's Soccer Team was trying to knock off the second place team in the Big West Conference Sunday afternoon, but the Cal Poly Mustangs scored the final two goals of the match to escape with a 3-2 victory (Video Recap).
The Highlanders entered the day in fourth place in conference, and a win over the Mustangs had the potential to vault them all the way to second.
Cal Poly got on the board in the 27th minute as Elise Krieghoff headed Megan Abutin's cross to Sara Lancaster. Elizabeth Silas's dive came up just short, and the Mustangs led 1-0.
UC Riverside responded almost immediately as Celina Valencia one-timed a Tyler Cunningham pass into the back of the Cal Poly net just 61 seconds later to tie the score.
Amber Marani put the Highlanders on top with 3:05 to go before the half off of a free kick from 32 yards out.
In the 67th minute, Lydia Anderson chipped the ball to Abutin who beat the UC Riverside defense for her sixth score of the season.
With overtime looming, Abutin dropped the ball back to the Krieghoff, the conference's leading scorer. She unleashed a kick from 35 yards out that beat Silas to the upper right hand corner, giving the Mustangs their final margin of victory.
