Postseason Hopes For Women's Soccer Come To An End In 1-0 Loss At Cal State Fullerton
10/26/2014 8:15:00 PM | Women's Soccer
Fullerton, CA—The UC Riverside Women's Soccer Team needed a victory Sunday evening to keep its postseason hopes alive, but it was Cal State Fullerton who netted a first-half goal en route to a 1-0 win over the Highlanders.
UCR entered the weekend in sixth place in conference, four points behind Fullerton for the fourth and final Big West Tournament berth. A win would have moved them past UC Davis into fifth place, within a point of the Titans and two points back of CSUN in third. The Highlanders then would have needed to beat Long Beach State in the final regular season match of the season, and get some help to secure their second straight trip to the conference tourney.
Although a postseason berth is off the table, UC Riverside can still secure its first winning season since 2006 with a victory over the 49ers on Sunday, November 2.
The Fullerton match was a rematch of the 2013 Big West Conference Championship which saw the Titans advance to the NCAA Tournament via penalty kicks. Sunday's match was just as hotly contested, with Rebecca Wilson providing the lone score of the evening.
Colleen Ortega and Brianna Chapman found Wilson in the 32nd minute for her 10th goal of the season. That's all the offense the Titans would need as their defense held tight for their fifth shutout of the season.
The Highlanders season-ending match against Long Beach State kicks off at 2 pm PT at the UC Riverside Soccer Stadium. They will honor the five members of the UC Riverside Women's Soccer Class of 2015 in a ceremony prior to kick off.
