Women's Soccer Blanks Grand Canyon 3-0 In Season Opener At UNLV Rebel Classic

Las Vegas—The UC Riverside Women's Soccer Team opened its 2014 season in grand style Friday evening, pitching a 3-0 shutout against Grand Canyon at the UNLV Rebel Classic (Box Score).
The last time the Highlanders (1-0) began a season by blanking the opposition was in 2008 when they upended Southern Utah 5-0 in the season-opener.
Sophomore Danielle Lopez got the Highlanders on the board in the 32nd minute of play as freshman Tayler Dragoo found her for her first career goal as a collegian.
It remained a 1-0 score until midway through the second when sophomore Sammy Arellano collected a Celina Valencia pass and found the back of the net for her fourth career score.
Senior Kaitlin Anzaolne put the Highlanders up 3-0 with 5:48 remaining in the match, as she was on the business end of a Tyler Cunningham pass and beat the 'Lopez (0-1) keeper to effectively end the match.
UC Riverside takes on Northern Arizona on Sunday in the final game of the UNLV Rebel Classic beginning at 10:30 am PT. The Lumberjacks (0-1) dropped a 2-1 decision to host UNLV late Friday evening.
