Las Vegas, NV—The UC Riverside Women's Soccer Team improved to 2-0 on the season with a 4-2 victory over Northern Arizona at the UNLV Rebel Classic Sunday morning (Box Score).
The Highlanders limited the Lumberjacks to just seven shots on the day, but the first came off the foot of Haley Wingender, and found its way past the UCR defenses to put NAU up 1-0 with just 4:25 gone in the match.
UC Riverside countered with eight shots over the next 16 minutes, and tied the score in the 23rd minute of play when Tyler Cunningham netted her first score of the season.
Less than four minutes later it was a 2-1 Highlanders' lead as NAU keeper Meghan Dickmann saved a Cunningham shot, but Alexa Bustamante was their to tap in the rebound with 19:20 go in the first.
UCR took that one-goal lead into the locker room at halftime, and just 4:22 into the second, Amanda Apelian recorded the first goal of her collegiate career on an assist by Blanca Barrio putting the Highlanders up by two.
Ten minutes later, Wingender's shot from 12 years out reduced the lead to one, and gave the junior her second goal of the day.
With less than nine minutes remaining, Sammy Arellano tacked on an insurance goal with her second score of the year, giving the Highlanders their final 4-2 margin of victory.
UC Riverside returns to the golden state this weekend for a road match at San Diego State on Friday, August 29 at 4 pm PT.
