Third-Set Rally Falls Short in Bakersfield

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – UC Riverside put up a furious rally in set three fighting off six match points, but fell in three to CSU Bakersfield on Saturday night at the Icardo Center.

Saturday's 34-32 third set is the first UCR volleyball set to reach 30 points since last year's season finale against Long Beach State and the longest since 2014.

Chloe Ruhl got out to a hot start with two of UCR's three aces in set one. Ruhl's aces came in back-to-back fashion after subbing in at 5-4 for her first touches of the evening. The freshman finished with a season-high three on the night and now has four in her last two matches after one at Cal Poly on Friday.

Kenzy Militar put up seven digs in the back row through the first set and finished the evening with 14. Also on defense, Mylei Vargas-Deason recorded dig number 300 for her career on the night and is now averaging 2.06 per set on the year.

Militar put in an all-around efficient shift for the Highlanders on Saturday night, hitting .667 on top of her 14 digs with six assists tacked on.

UCR recorded 25 digs in set one after 37 total at Cal Poly on Friday.

Tayler Hifo was the second Highlander of the night to go back-to-back in the service ace department as UC Riverside jumped out to a 4-1 lead in set two. Hifo recorded her sixth double double in her last eight matches with 26 assists and 14 digs against the Roadrunners.

The Highlanders went on a brief 4-0 run in set three with Isabella Scarlett racking up three of her nine kills on the night during the spurt. Right behind Scarlett on the night was Ayanna Kimbrough with seven kills, her most since registering six against Louisiana Monroe on September 2 in Houston.

UC Riverside once again would not back down with a 7-3 run at the right time, coming within one point of Bakersfield at 23-22 in set three. Both sides traded points with Kimbrough putting down her seventh kill of the night before Militar served up Highlander ace number nine of the night. UCR would not quit, fighting off six match points in set three before falling.

UC Riverside will continue its longest road trip of the season on Friday, October 14 at UC Santa Barbara for a 7:00 p.m. first serve.
