Highlanders fall in Big West home opener
RIVERSIDE, Calif. - UC Riverside (2-7-0, 0-2-0) dropped a 2-0 decision to California Baptist (6-1-1, 1-1-0) on a hot Saturday afternoon at the UC Riverside Soccer Stadium.
Finley Aghassi and Lauren Nguyen put the Highlanders' first two shots on the board in the opening nine minutes, with Nguyen's attempt meeting CBU's keeper.
CBU broke through in the 15th minute after VAR negated a Lancer goal a few minutes earlier. California Baptist doubled its lead in the 21st.
A wave of subs brought about more offense with Morgan Humphrey's attempt on net in the 32nd. Natalie Darling followed with a shot in the 34th minute.
UCR applied more pressure around the second-half hydration break. Nguyen lifted her second shot out left in the 55th minute, and Macie Baird followed it up in the 58th minute. Darling put her second shot on frame in the 69th, and Rylee Lewis applied another in the 78th.
Jayla Justice had a chance to cut the deficit from the spot in the 90th minute, but saw her penalty batted out of the top shelf.
UCR returns to the pitch on Wednesday, September 30, with a 4:00 pm kickoff at Sacramento State on ESPN+.
