Women's Soccer Plays To 1-1 Tie vs. Visiting Cal State Fullerton
10/23/2011 6:40:00 PM | Women's Soccer
Riverside—The UC Riverside Women's Soccer Team was hoping to move up the Big West conference standings Sunday evening with a win over visiting Cal State Fullerton, but they had to settle for a 1-1 tie. That inched the Highlanders into a sixth-place tie with Pacific. The top four teams advance to the postseason. (Box Score)
UCR (7-8-2, 2-3-1) got on the board early as Celina Valencia and Shelley Brumbaugh teamed up for Brumbaugh's first career goal with just 2:29 gone in the first. Valencia drove down into the right corner, and crossed it to Brumbaugh, who redirected it past Titans keeper Lindsey Maricic from three yards out.
Cal State Fullerton (7-8-3, 1-4-1) almost got on the board with 14:22 to go in the first half when Sara Slaughter got caught too far away from the goal, but Shelby Lewis got back just in time to keep Ann Marie Tangorra's shot from crossing the goal line. Unfortunately, the Titans were able to pick up the equalizer on a Stacey Fox score in the 37th minute of play
Although both teams had opportunities after halftime, neither team was able to dent the back of the net.
Next up for the Highlanders is a Thursday, October 27 home match against Cal State Northridge. Kick off is slated for 7 pm PT, as UC Riverside honors its graduating senior class prior to match time.
