Riverside—Fresh off of its season-opening, 2-1 win over CSU Bakersfield, the UC Riverside Women's Soccer Team heads to Southern Utah Sunday for a 3 pm PT kick off against the Thunderbirds. (Watch The 2012 Season Preview Video) (Watch Highlights From The Win Over CSU Bakersfield)
The Highlanders are coming off of a season that saw them improve from one to eight wins as they battled for a conference playoff berth heading into the final match of the year.
Nat Gonzalez takes over the helm of the Highlanders as just the second coach in the team's 12-year history. He was previously the head coach of the UC Riverside Men's Soccer Team (2001-03) and more recently served as an assistant coach for the Highlanders Men's Soccer Team a year ago.
UCR is 2-1-0 all-time against the Roadrunners following Friday's victory, while owning a 6-0-0 record against Southern Utah.
UC Riverside and the Thunderbirds played on September 4 of last year with the Highlanders coming away with a 2-0 win. Southern Utah has scored just one goal in the six-match series as UCR has outscored them 20-1 over that span.

GAME NOTES
WELCOME BACK
UC Riverside's new head women's soccer coach has a familiar look about him: Nat Gonzalez, who took over the team this winter, was the Highlanders head men's soccer coach from 2001-03, restarting a program that lay dormant for a number of years prior to UC Riverside making the transition to Division I.
A JESSICA BY ANY OTHER NAME
UC Riverside incumbent goalkeeper Jessica White was sidelined with an injury for all but two matches last season, but Jessica Olafsen stepped in admirably posting a goals against average of 1.26 in 11 matches.
Olafsen was named the conference defensive player of the week on September 5, 2011 as she allowed just one goal, on a penalty kick, in two matches for a goals against average of 0.50 for the week. She also stopped 17 of 18 shots on goal during those two matches.
WHAT A DIFFERENCE A YEAR MAKES
Two years ago, the Highlanders suffered through a one-win season that produced just three goals all year long. In 2011, however, UC Riverside picked up eight wins on the season, remaining in the hunt for a Big West Conference postseason berth until the final match of the season, while denting the back of the net on 21 occasions.
SPREADING THE WEALTH
Ten members of the Highlanders dented the back of the net last year which is the most goal scorers the team has posted in a season since 2007 when 12 players etched their names into the scoring column.
SEASON OPENERS
With the Highlanders 2-1 win vs. CSU Bakersfield to open the 2012 season, UC Riverside is now 6-5-1 in season openers. However, they had lost three straight prior to this season.
