Morales's Rebound Of Overtime PK Keeps Highlanders Record Perfect

UC Riverside 2, Southern Utah 1 (2 OT) - Box Score
Cedar City, UT—The UC RIverside Women's Soccer Team's record remained perfect Sunday afternoon thanks to Andrea Morales's rebound of her own overtime penalty kick that gave the Highlanders a 2-1 win at Southern Utah (0-1).
The match almost didn't take place as inclement weather delayed the start time for more than an hour. The Highlanders (2-0) then had to endure extra time despite outshooting the Thunderbirds 19-7 on the day.
With 2:21 gone in the second overtime period, Celina Valencia's shot hit the post, but Southern Utah was whistled for a foul in the box. Morales lined up to take the penalty kick, but Thunderbirds keeper Charly Booth was able to make the save. Morales followed her shot, though, and the Highlanders had their second win of the season in hand.
Despite the overall shot discrepancy, it was Southern Utah's Madison Wood who scored first on an unassisted shot from 20 yards out with 14:08 to go in the first period.
The Highlanders tied the match less than seven minutes later when Tyler Cunningham found Ashley Graves on a cross from the left side for her first goal of the season.
UCR outshot The Thunderbirds in the second period 8-3, but couldn't break the tie in regulation. The Highlanders took the lone attempt in the first extra stanza before the sequence of shots in the second OT that gave Morales the third game-winning goal of her career,
The last time the Highlanders won their first two matches in a season was in 2008 when they won their first three matches on their way to an 8-10-2 record. The 2004 squad holds the program record with nine straight wins to start a season. The Highlanders finished that year with a 13-2-4 mark including 3-2-4 in Big West play.
