Riverside—The UC Riverside Men's Soccer Team finishes up a three-match homestand this week as the Highlanders host San Diego on Thursday, September 18 at 7 pm PT.
After opening the 2014 season with a 5-1 victory over Pacific (box score/recap/video recap), the Highlanders have dropped four straight matches—most recently a tough, 1-0 decision to Santa Clara. The Highlanders outshot the Broncos, 14-7, including 8-3 in shots on goal, but it was a Santa Clara goal in the first minute of play that proved to be the lone score of the evening (box score/recap/video recap).
San Diego brings a 2-1-3 record with them to the Inland Empire, including three results against Big West competition—ties against Cal State Fullerton (0-0), Sacramento State (3-3) and UC Davis (1-1). The Toreros also recently dropped a 2-0 decision at home to #8 New Mexico—a team the Highlanders fell to, 2-1, on the road two weeks ago.
San Diego has scored 13 goals in six matches led by Connor Brandy and Torrey DeArmas, each of whom has three scores on the year. Thomas Olsen has started five of the six matches for the Toreros and boasts a goals against average of 1.31.
UC Riverside and San Diego have squared off against one another on five previous occasions (view results). The Toreros won the first four meetings, but the teams battled to a scoreless tie a year ago (box score/recap).

BUMP IN THE ROAD
After scoring five goals in the season-opener, the Highlanders have been held to just two goals in their last four matches.
BACK-TO-BACK-TO BACK
The Highlanders recorded their first-ever winning season as a Division I program in 2011, and made it back-to-back-to-back winning campaigns in 2012 and 2013 posting records of 10-8-0 and 9-8-3. Those 10 victories also established a Division I-era, single-season record for the program.
NON-CONFERENCE SUCCESS
With a 7-1-0 mark in non-conference matches in 2012, the Highlanders broke the program record for non-conference wins in a season established the previous season when UC Riverside finished the non-conference portion of their season with a 5-2-1 mark. Over the past three-plus seasons, UCR is 18-9-3 in non-conference matches, but just 1-4-0 in 2014.
POSTSEASON PLAY
The Highlanders advanced to their first-ever Big West Tournament in 2011, setting what was then the Division I era record for wins in the process. They advanced to their second conference tournament in three years by finishing third in the South Division of the Big West a year ago.
